- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze each PAC-12 conference athletic department to assess the environmental sustainability information that is being communicated to stakeholders. The study specifically focuses on each athletic department's primary website. This content analysis was longitudinal and conducted in two phases. The theoretical framing was based on the work of McCullough and colleagues (2016), in which the concept of waves describes the variety of approaches to environmental sustainability by each athletic department. The findings were consistent with previous scholarship on this topic and indicated that engagement in pro-environmental behavior falls into three categories - awareness, knowledge, and action. Findings also indicated a similar distribution of institutions across all three categories. Ultimately, this illustrated how each athletic department is actively addressing the environment, even if the level of investment varied across the athletic departments. Practical and theoretical implications are suggested for ways collegiate athletic departments can move forward with their environmental sustainability efforts.
