- Abstract
What do we know about Jewish sectarianism in the Late Second Temple Judaism? On the basis of the Dead Sea Scrolls, we know much more, but the interpretation of the sources is not without problems and the placement of the Qumran movement in the map of Second Temple Judaism has varied over the decades of Scrolls scholarship. This contribution investigates to what extent the early characterizations of the Scrolls movement as "Essene," "sectarian," and "monastic" still hold in Qumran scholarship today and if any consensus is to be expected. Rather than abandoning any label as such, the contribution seeks to find what in each different conceptual framework and comparison is useful.
