The Afro-Asiatic Floating World: Post-Soul Implications of the Art of iona rozeal brown.
- Authors
Anderson, Crystal S.
- Abstract
This article focuses on the landscape paintings of African American artist iona rozeal brown. It is stated that her paintings feature geishas and samurais with iconography of African American hip hop culture, like hairstyles and designer's clothing. Brown's paintings reflect on the cultural fusion of African American and Japanese which bring light the ambivalence within post-soul aesthetics. It is stated that brown relies on a traversal of black American and Japanese cultural lines in her paintings which mark her as a beneficiary of legacy of a century of interaction between African Americans and Japanese.
