- Authors
Gavira Márquez, María Concepción
- Abstract
This article aims to delve into copper mining in Michoacan at the end of the 18th century, attempting to identify the mines scattered throughout this region which have been scarcely touched by historians. After a sketch of colonial policies of intervention in this sector, we aim first to locate the mines and producers, and their relations with local and regional markets. After 1780 the Crown established a monopoly on New Spanish copper to attempt to control the production and the price. We will aim to evaluate the efficacy and the effects of this monopoly on the producers of copper and on the market in New Spain.
