- Abstract
The article focuses on the political aspect of alternative medicine field at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It discusses the comments of Iowa Senator Tom Harkin against the medical research and works initiated by National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and its relation to the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) research results at the NIH. It mentions the creation of Office of Alternative Medicine (OAM) driven by Senator Harkin to investigate and evaluate alternative therapies. It cites on the contributions of various executives to the evolution of CAM including doctor Joseph Jacobs, doctor Wayne Jonas, and NCCAM first director Stephen Straus. It also presents the budgetary issues and continued political pressure faced in CAM research.
