- Title
Hiring an office manager: should you build or buy your talent?
- Authors
Patton, Carol; Schmidt, Mary E.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the importance of having an effective office manager for an optometric practice who can handle management situations effectively. It points out that many office managers are not really trained for the position but only get promoted to the position based on seniority rather than the acquisition of skills. Mary E. Schmidt, president and founder of EyeSystems Consulting in California, holds seminars for first-time managers. She enumerates four basic procedures which effective managers should practice. The procedures include a clear communication to employees of what is expected of them, training employees on their tasks and giving them quizzes about the practice, and creating performance objectives for the staff as part of the long-term goals of the practice.
