- Abstract
The article provides information regarding the guilds in Modern South Asia. It presents an overview of the artisans and merchant collectives in the late medieval India. It notes the existence of fundamental separation between the agrarian economy and the towns where political elite and great temples in India were located. It indicates the similarities between the European guild in the late medieval and the modern south Asian guild. It also mentions the general framework of the devised regulatory system of different regions, cities and castes in India. Moreover, it also indicates the correlation between the concept of community and guild.
