Abstract
An interview with Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Arnold Demain is presented. When asked about the neglected areas of natural product discovery and biotechnology, he mentions the discovery of new small-molecule natural products such as the antibiotics. Demain believes that the emergence of resistant organisms is a crisis in development. He also discusses the reasons for the struggles in natural product discovery behind other approaches to pharmaceutical discovery.
