- Abstract
This article focuses on the Québec streaming platform Club Illico and, more specifically, on its "Original series." Scholarly literature on over-the-top media services or "portals" has mainly focused on the case of the multinational streaming company Netflix, even when research has been conducted in Canada or Québec. Through a textual analysis of Blue Moon (2016–) and Victor Lessard (2017–), this article sheds light on the narrative, discursive, and ideological orientations of some of Club Illico's original content, mostly by providing a careful examination of the gendered construction of characters and story arcs in these serials. While trying to distinguish its catalog from other streaming platforms available in Québec, Club Illico resorts to promotional and curating strategies that emphasize its similarities with U.S. broadcasters and distributors. As such, our analysis of Blue Moon and Victor Lessard shows that these serials try to localize their characters, but that they are also clearly influenced by transnational narrative trends. In the end, this analysis leads to a reflection on the influence of transnational narrative patterns in the era of over-the-top television, which seem to encourage the reproduction of similar narrative structures and gender stereotypes when creating "original" series.
