- Title
Effects of Distance on Visual and Audiovisual Speech Recognition.
- Authors
Jordan, Timothy R.; Sergeant, Paul
- Abstract
The article discusses the effects of distance on visual and audiovisual speech recognition in observers. It informs that shift in a talker's posture and position relative to an observer can alter the visibility of facial information which, in turn, may affect perception of visual speech and its influence on auditory speech recognition. It is stated that a variation which may influence perception of visual and audiovisual speech is the distance at which a talker's face is observed. It is stated that changes in facial image size produced by changes in distance may affect perception of visual speech if a shift in the size of the image creates a concomitant shift in the quantity or quality of information encoded from visible articulators.
