- Abstract
In the early 1950s, India's economic position was much better than that of many other countries. Among the developing countries, India has a relatively broad-based industrial structure and a significant export market share for several commodities such as tea, jute and cotton textiles. But the growth of India's exports has been poor in comparison to several other developing countries. Many countries have achieved commendable progress through economic policy reforms and other measures. The conservative and inward-looking policies of India coupled with the recession abroad and an increasing competition and protection in the world market have all contributed to this. However, the export promotion measures in the early 1990s have given a boost to India's exports and the increase in India's imports has been very large over these years. India has become a major trading hub in the international market. India and the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) are natural partners. Geographically, India shares maritime borders with Indonesia and Thailand and a land border of 1600 km with Myanmar. There is also a historical landmark of the Indian Legacy in ASEAN. India and ASEAN relations as they exist today are in some ways, a reconfiguration of the age-old ties that existed 2000 years ago, only the modes of trade have changed. Instead of the silk route, countries now use tech-oriented routes to link up.
