- Abstract
The author of this article discusses the operation Musketeer Revised - code named of the Operation Anglo-French Suez in November 1956 - which he takes part as a sub-lieutenant in the West Yorkshire Regiment. In November 1956, an Anglo-French attack is launched against Egypt to seize the recently nationalized Suez Canal, and cause the overthrow of the president, the young Colonel Gamal Abdul Nasser. The French intervened to engage Israel and the Great Britain in a top secret military pact. The Israelis had their own reasons to confront Nasser. The Egyptians had prevented Israeli ships to borrow the Suez Canal, and Egyptian military positions in the Sinai made difficult the use of Eilat. On 24 October 1956, we conclude the Protocol of Sèvres, by which it was decided that Israel would attack Egypt and, leading from the Sinai, would go to the Canal. France and Britain enjoined both parties to stop and to withdraw from the Suez Canal's area. Israel would accept, but certainly the Egyptians refused because to accept would mean the abandonment of Sinai… This article discusses the Suez Crisis of 1956 and the withdrawal of Aden, two episodes of the post-war colonial British marked the end of the game for what remained of the Empire in the Middle East.
