- Title
"A CARRION DEATH": THE THEME OF THE GOLD CASKET IN THE MERCHANT OF VENICE.
- Authors
Stone, James W.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the impersonal, non-characterological aspects of the play "The Merchant of Venice." It explores the pattern of imagery dominated by the motif of gold. It also examines the symbolic association of gold with death and the suspicion that love is linked to an undercurrent of avarice and necrophilia. The allusion to the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece is presented in Bassanio's speech to Antonio praising Portia's value and worth. The significance of the three caskets in Belmont is discussed.
