- Abstract
The urban growth of the touristic city San Carlos de Bariloche has predominantly advanced on the central-western coast of Lake Nahuel Huapi, where the greatest natural attractions are found. At the same time, it has also grown in other areas with harsher climates and environments that are comparatively less-valued. It is in these areas to the south and southwest of town where a large number of the low-income neighborhoods known as "El Alto" have been established. Since the economic revival in the first decade of the 21st century, housing difficulties related to land and housing access have achieved notoriety. This article argues that land price growth reached levels that restricted access even in El Frutillar, one of the neighborhoods in El Alto that was historically a gateway for low-income families. This major restriction entailed changes in land access conditions that can be associated with the typical effects of the tourism industry.
