- Title
Understanding mesenteric panniculitis: A rare cause of abdominal pain.
- Authors
Boyer, Anne
- Abstract
Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare, non-specific inflammatory process involving the adipose tissue of the mesentery. This condition is benign and self-limiting and is rarely seen by nurses. Mesenteric panniculitis may be manifested by chronic abdominal pain, gut obstructive symptoms, nausea, vomiting, fever and malaise. Abdominal computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans can be useful in distinguishing the several conditions that can mimic mesenteric panniculitis. Anne Boyer provides an overview of the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of mesenteric panniculitis, including a patient case history, to raise awareness of this rarely seen condition among GI nurses. INSET: Case Study.
