- Abstract
The article discusses former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, exploring the historical memory and historiography of his role in developing American sporting culture. It explores Roosevelt's chronology as an athlete, comments on his ideas regarding the role played by sports in society, and analyzes his impact on athletic culture during his presidency. Other topics include Roosevelt's use of the office of the presidency as a way to persuade Americans to compete in sports, myths regarding Roosevelt's hunting and athletic accomplishments, and Roosevelt's thoughts on sports such as prizefighting, baseball, and football.
