- Abstract
California Governor Gavin Newsom's executive order requiring all new passenger vehicles sold in the state to be zero-emissions by 2035 is seen as a crucial step in the fight against climate change and a boost to the state's economy. However, the transition to electric vehicles will require significant amounts of resources, particularly lithium, which is used in electric car batteries. The Thacker Pass lithium mine in Nevada, which will be the largest lithium mine in the country, has faced opposition from Native tribes and environmental groups due to its impact on the environment and sacred sites. The extraction of lithium raises concerns about the exploitation of Native lands and the continuation of a profit-driven approach to addressing climate change.
