- Abstract
The article examines the nature of the commission of retail theft and its effects on the economy in Australia. It mentions that two to three percent of loss because of shoplifting can impair the operations of smaller establishments in addition to the uncertainty of the commission whether the theft is perpetrated by customers, staff or suppliers. Details on the various categories of shop thieves in Australia which include the impulsive shop thieves, the occasional ones and the semi-professionals are presented. It also discusses how the perpetrators respond when apprehended, their motivations and how frequent they commit such crime.
