The Formation of Modern National Identity and Interethnic Relations in the Galician Ukrainian Highlands: Some Findings of a Local/Oral History Project.
- Authors
Heretz, Leonid
- Abstract
The article presents information on a local and oral history project conducted in the village of Mshanets, Ukraine, which sought to provide a better understanding of the formation of Ukrainian national identity and ethnic relations in that country. The author describes the long history of the village and its surrounding area, beginning with its founding in 1500. More broadly, the article seeks to insert an understanding of rural and non-elite Ukrainian identity into the historiography of the country. Emphasis is therefore given to the national identity of the Ruthenian and Carpathian ethnic groups within the region of Galicia.
