- Abstract
The article reports on the launch of the world's first commercial ocean-seeding trial by the Planktos Inc. to stimulate carbon sequestering phytoplankton blooms and generate saleable carbon offsets in San Francisco, California. Planktos' Weatherbird II will sail for a site where it will fertilize nitrogen and phosphorus rich waters with a missing nutrient to induce phytoplankton blooms that could draw carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and lock it into deep ocean layers. Russ George, Planktos President and CEO said that if the project succeed and the company's efforts expand, not only would atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations be reduced but declining ocean productivity might also be reversed.
