- Abstract
A literary criticism is presented of the ancient Greek play "Philoctetes," by Sophocles. The play's depiction of dignity as a way to warn citizens of Athens, Greece that their democracy was in peril is discussed. An overview of the play's portrayal the suffering of the mythological character Philoctetes is provided. The relationship between inequality in the U.S. and its depiction in "Philoctetes" is discussed.
