- Abstract
Keith Folse, the author of the article "The Effect of Type of Written Exercise on L2 Vocabulary Retention," provides his response to a critical review of his research. Folse believes that research on vocabulary development in the field of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) is underdeveloped. The article also responds to criticism of Folse’s methods of new vocabulary teaching, the tests of student vocabulary knowledge, and the methods used to evaluate student test responses. Folse is critical of methods that were developed in EFL textbooks during the 1980s to create better student communication. He believes that students do not always benefit from texts designed to solicit student communication.
