- Abstract
The article discusses the development of a new wafer-scale CMOS detector called Quantum C100, which is optimized for 100 keV cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). The use of lower operating voltages in cryo-EM reduces sample damage and allows for the recovery of more structural information. The majority of structures deposited in the Electron Microscopy Data Bank (EMDB) are determined using a single particle approach at 300 keV, but the adoption of cryo-EM is limited by factors such as limited access to facilities, sample preparation difficulties, and cost. The Quantum C100 detector, developed by Quantum Detectors, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), and the Rosalind Franklin Institute in the UK, aims to address these limitations and provide widespread access to structure determination. The detector features a large detecting area and high frame rates, and its performance and design choices are discussed in the article.
