Microbiome: Microbial mystery.
- Authors
DeWeerdt, Sarah
- Abstract
The article focuses on research into the role gut bacteria play in the formation of colorectal cancer (CRC). It states studies have had consistent findings of high levels of Fusobacterium, commonly found in the mouth but rarely in the healthy gut, in the microbiomes of people with CRC along with higher-than-normal Escherichia coli levels. It mentions studies using mice to investigate the impact of gut-dwelling microbes on CRC and the impact of bacterial toxins on inflammation and tumor growth.
