- Abstract
Data on the distribution of rotifers of the genus Polyarthra Ehrenberg, 1834, family Synchaetidae, in the Urals are summarized based on the author's research and an analysis of literature sources. Eight valid species have been detected: Polyarthra dolichoptera Idelson, 1925; P. euryptera Wierzejski, 1891; P. longiremis Carlin, 1943; P. luminosa Kutikova, 1962; P.major Burckhardt, 1900; P. minor Voigt, 1904; P. remata Skorikov, 1896; and P. vulgaris Carlin, 1943. The ninth of the recorded species, P. dissimulans Nipkow, 1952, may be referred to as a species inquirendum (Nogrady and Segers, 2002). Data on their localities, biology, bioindication, and quantitative development in the waters of the Urals are given. P. dolichoptera and P. vulgaris are most common and abundant in water bodies of the Urals. Low water temperatures probably limit the geographical distribution of the mainly thermophilic Polyarthra species to northern latitudes.
