- Abstract
Emigrating during the Middle Ages could include the possibility of dying far from your hometown. The situation of the Genoese between 14th and 15th century represents a privileged case of study to investigate the links that remained between citizens who emigrated to the Levant and their city of origin. The wills are a documentary source that allow us to investigate the lasting economic, personal, parental, affective, and religious links. The recovery of inheritance, done through proxies, was a major concern: it can help showing the dense Genoese network in the Eastern Mediterranean. The clauses and legacies reveal the differences between temporary and permanent emigrants, the continuity of affections with the Ligurian Riviera or, on the contrary, the severing of all ties. The continuity of investments in the Genoese public debt, even by those who headed overseas, was another strong link to the capital city. Genoa could be abandoned by those who settled in the East, but almost never completely forgotten.
