- Abstract
The article discusses the State Assembly of North Carolina which sat in 1883 and held sixteen African American representatives and three African American senators elected as Republicans. The author considers the politics and government of North Carolina during 19th century after the U.S. Civil War and discusses issues including North Carolina's state constitutional history, election laws, Reconstruction, support of the national Republican Party for African American candidates in the South, the education of the African American legislators, racially biased laws, and race statistics for counties in North Carolina.
