- Abstract
This article deals in detail with two related passages of the famous Iguvine Tablets (3rd-1st centuries B.C.) from the Umbrian Gubbio, which have as its content sacrificial rituals with regard to some sort of ancient league/federation (IIb 1-29 and Vb 8-18). Important from a social-historical point of view, but very differently interpreted terms such as umbr. fameřia (etymologically related to lat. familia) are only used here. Recent research would like to recognise in this so-called “Iguvine League” an ethnic-federal agreement whose territory is said to have reached from Umbria to Picenum. This interpretation is critically questioned from a historical perspective and a new view is proposed that focuses less on political-ethnic and much more on economic motives. Specifically, the requirements of short-distance transhumance could have played an important role for a local association in pre-Roman Umbria. A whole series of textual details can be well reconciled with this new interpretation, even if concrete proof cannot of course be provided.
