- Abstract
The article uses the young adult book entitled "Wolf by the Ears," by Ann Rinaldi, to explore the cultural significance of Sally Hemings, who was a Black woman that secretly had children with former U.S. President Thomas Jefferson. In 1993, it was revealed through DNA evidence that the last of Hemings' children, Eston Hemings, was fathered by Jefferson, which generated a large amount of publicity concerning the impact of the evidence on the historical image of the United States' third president. The article examines why Rinaldi chose to center "Wolf by the Ears" around Harriet Hemings, Jefferson's potential daughter, and not around Sally or Eston. The article also discusses the significance of Sally Hemings in the context of U.S. history.
