- Abstract
The article focuses on the political and economic problem facing France. The victory of National Front, lead by Jacques Le Pen, in the 1984 European Community election revealed that the country is facing a serious national depression under the administration of President Francois Mitterrand. According to the author, Mettirrand's decision to abandon the socialist government and end the Union of the Left in effort to salvage the declining economy was an acknowledgement of the country's problem.
