- Abstract
In the contemporary societies, ethnic identity takes important place since it contributes in forming of interpersonal and intergroup relations. Depending on its presence (of the ethnic identity) and power, people get mad at each-other, they quarrel and even hostile relations are created not only in interpersonal but also in intergroup level. However, how come that ethnic identity is developed, how it is transferred from generation to generation, and how come that certain individuals have stronger ethnic identity than the others. Several theories and different psychologists have answered these questions. What is in common in the models of the ethnic identity development is the active approach, individual exploration in the creation and development of the ethnic identity. However, the role of the family, the parents approach, importance of the ethnic identity in the family, the communication style with the children for matters related to the ethnic identity are also "participating" in forming the ethnic identity of the children.
