- Abstract
The article "On the Relationship between State and Religion in Dante: The Delicate Example of King Saul" examines the relationship between state and religion in Dante's work, particularly in relation to the story of King Saul. Dante refers to the figure of Saul twice, once in the Purgatorio (Cantos X and XII) and once in the Monarchia. In order to understand Dante's portrayal, it is important to know the Old Testament story of Saul and understand how it became a central figure in debates about the relationship between political power and faith in the Middle Ages. The text describes the story of Saul and David from the Old Testament and analyzes the phenomenon of pride that arises from secular power. It explains that humility is the reason why Saul was chosen as king, while his pride led God to take away his power. The text also refers to Thomas Aquinas, who argues that secular and religious power each have their own sphere of authority. The text emphasizes the importance of humility and obedience in leadership and presents David as a role model for medieval kings. In Dante's "Purgatorio," the portrayal of Saul is analyzed as an example of pride and divine punishment. In the Monarchia, Dante defends the idea of world empire and argues against papal interventionism.
