- Abstract
The article presents information on a study which proposes the use of activity-related attention as an intervening variable linking job characteristics to job outcomes. The five job dimensions cited include skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy and feedback. The first three summatively affect the emergence of experienced meaningfulness of the work. The fourth dimension, autonomy, contributes to the feelings of personal responsibility for the work outcomes, while the fifth, feedback, determines individuals' knowledge of their effectiveness, or knowledge of results. The three psychological states of meaningfulness, responsibility, and knowledge of results, combine to influence the quality of performance, job satisfaction, absenteeism and turnover. An examination of findings in activation theory research suggests the importance of arousal as a mediator between job characteristics and job performance. A basic assumption of activation theory is that arousal is dependent on the character of the stimulus.
