- Abstract
Bilingual education is broadly defined as the use of two languages as media of instruction with the goal of achieving proficiency in both languages. As it is impossible to separate language and culture, the term bilingual education also involves the concept of bicultural education. The present article focuses on the various types of bilingual education in terms of bilingual outcomes among students and the role of the teacher as a provider of academic content in two languages, as well as the one helping students adapt to two different cultures. A survey of the research literature reveals that there are several types of bilingual educational programmes, which range from transitional to heritage models. The various education models reflect the role of different languages in each society and the purposes they serve in the respective educational system. Educational programmes that are truly bilingual in nature and are supported by their communities are likely to result in academic success for their students. This article also reveals some of the challenges of the language immersion models, bilingualism, biliteracy and intercultural skills development. Research has shown that students who perform well in their native language also perform well academically in a second target language. Immersion students build strong second language knowledge upon which to continue moving toward full proficiency and to develop proficiency in subsequent languages. They have enhanced levels of meta-linguistic awareness, greater cognitive flexibility, better social interaction skills, understanding, tolerance, appreciation and respect for other languages and cultures. Being able to use more than one language effectively increases one's 'wealth' because it allows one to interact with others in various social contexts.
