- Authors
Goodman, Dena
- Abstract
A speech delivered by historian Dena Goodman at the 2012 annual meeting of the Society for French Historical Studies is presented. She considers letters she has read throughout her career and how the correspondence has taught her lessons about letter writing and history. Memorable letters include the 1793 letter from Augustin-François Silvestre to Alexandre Brongniart, both founders of the Société Philomathique; the 1764 letter from author Voltaire to philosopher Jean le Rond d'Alembert; and the 1772 letter written by author Stephanie Felicite, comtesse de Genlis to her employer the Duc de Chartres, later Louis Philippe II, Duc d'Orléans.
