- Abstract
Political discourse is defined as the kind of discourse used by people in exercise of power, in search for it or by those who use forms of resistance against it. However, common citizens also refer to politics when talking about an authority or an ideology, and use a sort of power-centered discourse. This study approaches everyday oral language with the objective to observe cases of political discourse. Texts from six people giving their opinions about politics were taken from the Sociolinguistic Corpus of Mérida (Domínguez & Mora, 1998), and then analyzed. Propositions suggested by Chilton (2004) were used. Results show that we can decide whether a discourse is political or not when it performs the most relevant functions of political discourse. Some oral texts showed early political discourse, while others showed people talking about politics.
