- Abstract
Podophyllin is one of the oldest remedies for genital warts. It is an alcoholic extract of plant resin derived from the species "Podophyllum peltatum" or "Podophyllum emodi. It is a complex chemical mixture containing several compounds, which are antimitotic. Application of podophyllin resin to genital warts leads to an inflammatory reaction, which histologically shows keratinocyte necrosis and abnormal mitoses. Subsequently, warts shrink in size. Reactions to podophyllin are usually mild, although the potential for misuse means most physicians will not dispense it for home use.
