- Abstract
Parents become more receptive to medical recommendations in the absence of communication breakdowns. A project designed to improve understanding between physicians and parents of patients began as a joint effort of cardiologists and psychiatry personnel at the Children's Memorial Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. A decision was made to carry out an outpatient study on how to improve parents' understanding of their child's heart condition. The research team also wanted to find out what our parents wanted to know, as well as what they actually understood. Parents may be reluctant to ask questions, but when encouraged, they almost invariably seek to learn more about the condition of their child. The flow of communication may be inadequate from both sides.
