- Abstract
Le Moniteur Ottoman, the French edition of the official gazette of the Ottoman Empire was launched at the end of 1831, under the direction of a French lawyer who had converted to journalism in Smyrna in the early 1820s. Although its director and editor-in-chief, Alexandre Blacque had been the subject of some studies, the content of the Le Moniteur Ottoman was never studied because the unique collection was almost inaccessible. This article therefore focuses on the content of the first five years of the gazette by inserting it into the political, intellectual and diplomatic context of the time. The analysis of the political and economic ideas expressed in this gazette as well as of the political discourse constructed there suggests that Le Moniteur Ottoman is a very rich primary source for the political and intellectual history of the Ottoman Empire of the 1830s.
