This article considers the development of Communist and militant political groups working against the authoritarian regime known as the Estado Novo in Portugal from the 1920s to the 1970s. The author focuses on the actions of the Partido Comunista Portugués (PCP; Portuguese Communist Party, in English), which was suppressed by the Estado Novo.
