- Abstract
Over the past five years, we have witnessed incredible progress in the management of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) patients. Much of the progress is attributed to new pharmacological therapy that, in addition to successfully controlling glycemia, reduces the incidence of cardiovascular events, heart failure, and slows renal failure. However, studies point out that about 50% of patients with SBT2 still do not reach their target glycemic hemoglobin (HbA1c). In addition to poorly regulated glycaemia, reduced quality of life and increased T2DM-related stress are also common in patients with T2DM. Self- -care of T2DM is largely related to the support of family members and other close relatives of a patient with T2DM. Researchers in this area have identified the need for a multidisciplinary approach to patients with T2DM and their close ones. The team of medical experts should also include experts in the psychosocial field, most notably where there is a poorer interpersonal relationship or poor support for a patient with T2DM. The purpose of the article, after reviewing the relevant literature, is to describe the role of family relationships in T2DM self-care and their relation to the psychosocial outcomes of patients with T2DM.
