- Abstract
The essay examines 18th-century readers' experience of reading didactic works through an analysis of the book "Letters on the Improvement of the Mind" by Hester Mulso Chapone. The author argues that many readers likely embraced the authority of this and other didactic texts due to the cultural capital they bestowed. The author also explores Chapone's adherence to contemporary gender ideology.
