- Abstract
Adolescent suicidal behavior is a neglected public health issue especially in middle and low income countries. Informed policy decision-making on suicidal behavior will need reliable information on the factors associated with suicidal ideation, which is one of the determinants of suicidal behaviour. The study aimed to identify factors associated with suicidal ideation among junior high school students in Suriname. Both bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses at 95% confidence interval were conducted to assess the association between relevant predictor variables and suicidal ideation within the previous twelve months. A total of 1,674 junior high school students responded to the question on suicidal ideation among other questions in a structured questionnaire from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS). Overall, 13.6% (9.1% of male and 17.9% of female) students reported having had suicidal ideation in the previous 12 months. The analysis showed that being anxious, lonely, having no close friends, being bullied, physically attacked or involved in a physical fight just like smoking cigarettes, alcohol consumption and abuse were all significantly associated with suicidal ideation. Interventions that address issues of violence against students, fighting with peers, initiation of smoking, alcohol consumption and abuse may reduce the risk of suicidal ideation.
