The article presents an overview of theories of neurology and pain which were developed by several scientists, including R. Melzack, P. Wall and K. L. Casey and discusses the ways in which the theories changed opinions about theories which had been developed by scientist and philosopher Rene Descartes. The impact that the theories have had on the field of acupuncture is discussed.
