The article looks into the aspects of gender, tradition and culture in relation to the translation of the art form Onnagata in English. The author explores the issue regarding gender and sexual politics in the practice of kabuki, as well as the exclusion of women from the stage. He also looks into history of Western writings about kabuki and the establishment of roles in theater plays.
