- Authors
Martin, Terence; Rosowski, Susan J.
- Abstract
The article discusses the features of Quebec, Canada which the author argues prompted author Willa Cather to write the novel "Shadows on the Rock." Cather's perspectives on her visits to the city, its residents, and the culture, as seen in letters written to Governor Wilbur Cross, are presented. In "Shadows on the Rock," Cather depicts a family based on the culture of Quebec, as its members mediate between two eras. The importance of the Holy Family to families in Quebec and to the character Cécile is discussed.
