- Title
Can Deceased Donor Transplantation Alone Eradicate the Kidney Waiting List?
- Authors
Kelarijani, Mohsen Khakzad
- Abstract
The article discusses the global shortage of transplant kidneys and the increasing prevalence of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). It highlights the better outcomes of living donor kidney transplants compared to deceased donor transplants. However, the authors argue that living unrelated donor kidney transplantation should not be stopped, as it is necessary to meet the needs of patients on the waiting list. The article suggests that a combination of deceased and living kidney donations is necessary to eliminate the waiting list and save lives. It also mentions the Iranian model of government-regulated paid living-unrelated kidney donation, which has proven successful in shortening the waitlist.
