- Authors
Watson, Karl
- Abstract
The article discusses the architectural features, contents, and the decay of Long Bay Castle owned by Samuel Hall Lord in Barbados. It explains that the castle, which is commonly known as Sam Lord's Castle, was constructed over a period of three years through the use of slave labour. The author states that after the death of Sam Lord, the castle's contents were auctioned by Abrams and Clairmonte and it was sold after the death of Sam Lord's sister, Elizabeth Sarsfield Lord, in 1851. It notes that the basic method of construction, which involved the use of cut coral stone, was discovered because of the fire that destroyed the castle in November 2010. Details related to the ownership of the castle by the Marriott Hotel chain in the 1980s and its closure in 2006 are also included.
