- Abstract
The article presents information about new innovative learning activities in the field of nursing. It is important of nursing students to understand statistics for research purpose. Most nursing students face difficulty in integrating the statistical concepts into the normal curve, although they are able to recite textbook definitions of mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and level of significance. An exercise, termed "Statistical Graffiti," was developed to improve conceptual recall of these terms for a senior-level nursing research class. The exercise requires students to demonstrate the nuances of the normal curve. The students discuss the normal curve with their peers and the instructor in a very different way for 15 minutes. The students find innovative ways to present the concepts and incorporate humor into their drawings related to statistics. One example of statistical graffiti is Normal Pirate. The pirate's ears, hairline, and eyes depict standard deviations, his nose the mean, his teeth and hat percentages, and the skull and crossbones "perception about statistics."
