- Abstract
The article discusses the career of U.S. diplomat and Princeton University graduate John Van Antwerp MacMurray (1881-1960), an expert on foreign relations in East Asia. His relationship with U.S. President Woodrow Wilson is discussed, as is his role in the Washington Naval Conference of 1921-1922. Also discussed is his perception of the importance of relations between China and Japan, overlooked at the time, for peace and stability in Asia. His accurate predictions of war in the Pacific stemming from Sino-Japanese conflict are also discussed.
